The State of the Art of Nurse Rostering
نویسندگان
چکیده
Nurse rostering is a complex scheduling problem that affects hospital personnel on a daily basis all over the world. The need for quality software solutions is acute for a number of reasons. In particular, it is very important to efficiently utilise time and effort, to evenly balance the workload among people and to attempt to satisfy personnel preferences. A high quality roster can lead to a more contented and thus more effective workforce. In this review, we discuss nurse rostering within the global personnel scheduling problem in healthcare. After considering some global approaches and previously written overviews, we present comparisons for measures that determine the complexity of nurse rostering problems. We describe and discuss solution approaches which span the interdisciplinary spectrum from operations research techniques to artificial intelligence methods. We conclude by drawing on the strengths and weaknesses of the literature to outline the key issues that need addressing in future nurse rostering research.

Nurse rostering using fuzzy logic: A case study
In this paper, we used the fuzzy set theory for modeling flexible constraints and uncertain data in nurse scheduling problems and proposed a fuzzy linear model for nurse rostering problems. The developed model can produce rosters that satisfy hospital objectives, ward requirements and staff preferences by satisfying their requests as much as possible. Fuzzy sets are used for modeling demands of...
متن کاملSolving a nurse rostering problem considering nurses preferences by graph theory approach
Nurse Rostering Problem (NRP) or the Nurse Scheduling Problem (NSP) is a complex scheduling problem that affects hospital personnel on a daily basis all over the world and is known to be NP-hard.The problem is to decide which members of a team of nurses should be on duty at any time, during a rostering period of, typically, one month. It is very important to efficiently utilize time and effort, ...
متن کاملCyber Swarm Algorithms for Multi-objective Nurse Rostering Problem
It is time-consuming to determine the nurse rostering using traditional human-involved manner in order to account for administrative operations, business benefits, governmental regulations, and nurse requests. Moreover, the objectives cannot be measured quantitatively even when the nurse rostering is generated after a lengthy manual process. This paper presents a multiobjective optimization met...
متن کاملPolynomially solvable formulations for a class of nurse rostering problems
Identifying underlying structures in combinatorial optimisation problems leads to a better understanding of a problem and, consequently, to efficient solution methodologies. The present paper introduces a new network flow formulation for a large class of nurse rostering problems. By solving an integer minimum cost flow problem in a carefully constructed network, nurses’ shift schedules can be c...
متن کاملA Hybrid Constraint Programming Approach for Nurse Rostering Problems
Due to the complexity of nurse rostering problems (NRPs), Constraint Programming (CP) approaches on their own have shown to be ineffective in solving these highly constrained problems. We investigate a two-stage hybrid CP approach on real world benchmark NRPs. In the first stage, a constraint satisfaction model is used to generate weekly rosters consist of high quality shift sequences satisfyin...
